Best Buddies
The Best Buddies program promotes friendships between people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and people without disabilities. Individuals from the Life Enrichment Center partner with students from Georgia College & State University in a “buddy match” through compatibility of common interests and personalities. GCSU students go through an orientation provided by the Life Enrichment Center and the GIVE center at the college to educate them about the organization. Once matched, the buddies are asked to make weekly contact, plan a monthly event together, and attend a monthly group event. We encourage contacts to be made directly between the buddies and his/her family or home provider. The Life Enrichment center helps facilitate the monthly group events and assists with issues as they arise, but allows the buddy relationship to flourish on its own. We feel that the less we are involved the greater the chances are the relationship will build naturally and be more meaningful.
